Here&#8217;s that well-known opening line from the first long syncopation exercise in Reed, p. 37 in the old editions, as written:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-hWEgr8G8J4k\/UFx3iYuAx5I\/AAAAAAAABvE\/WCkwpcAwYhs\/s1600\/rudimental-reed-paradiddles_01.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"43\" src=\"https:\/\/pdxdrummer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/rudimental-reed-paradiddles_01.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>First, play the quarter notes (or the equivalent) as 16th note paradiddles. On the longer values\/rests, play a paradiddle with an unaccented ending note, as on beat three of the second and last measures:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-rnSUxlcakjo\/UFx3l_8lFQI\/AAAAAAAABvM\/k-NoeSuYs8A\/s1600\/rudimental-reed-paradiddles_02.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"50\" src=\"https:\/\/pdxdrummer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/rudimental-reed-paradiddles_02.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Next, apply an appropriate paradiddle-type sticking to the longer values\/spaces\u2014 double paradiddles \/ paradiddle-diddles, or triple paradiddles \/ <i>paradiddle-diddle, diddles <\/i>as I&#8217;ll call them  (there aren&#8217;t enough commas in rudiment names for my taste) since that rudiment doesn&#8217;t exist to my knowledge.
